2026 Keys Lewis Keyes Heritage Scholarship

To encourage 2026 participation, the Keys Lewis Keyes Heritage Scholarship (KLKHS) extended the deadline to June 30, and the KLKHS committee is thrilled to report that we received six excellent entries. The range of candidates included high school graduates, college, and vocational students.

​

The competition was close between all candidates, and the committee had a tough time selecting the two winners of the 2026 KLKHS. Nonetheless, the committee has chosen Kayla Renai Berry and Persiah Martin as the recipients of this year’s scholarship.

​

Kayla Rena Berry (top photo) is the great-great-granddaughter of Clinton and Jearline Keys of Tacoma, Washington, daughter of Leonard and Jessica Berry. She is a graduate of International School of Dakar, Senegal. Kayla will attend Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia and shall enter her freshman class in September. Kayla intends to pursue a degree in psychology and a career as a neuropsychiatrist.

Persian Martin is the great-great-granddaughter of Abraham and Lillian Keyes of Beaumont, Texas, daughter of Kristen Coleman of San Bernadino, California. She is a graduate of Etiwanda High School of Etiwanda, California. Persiah will attend the University of California, Santa Barbara and shall enter her freshman class in September. Persiah intends to pursue a law degree and a career as a public defender.

I am positive that I speak for all KLK family members when I wish the six candidates the best in their individual academic endeavors, especially our two winners Kalya and Persiah. A KLKHS certificate and scholarship check will be mailed to Kayla and Persiah in August.

 

Lastly, I want to take this opportunity to solicit competition for the 2027 KLKHS program. The committee is currently revising the criteria and expects to publish the revisions on the KLK website in October 2026. The committee will mail a postcard reminder in December and post the notice on the KLK website (www.keyslewiskeyes.org)  quarterly starting in February 2027. The KLKHS committee will accept applications from January 15 through June 1. We encourage future applicants to thoroughly review the new requirements and file your package by the deadline. Keys Lewis Keyes Heritage Scholarship

Application Procedures & Requirements

 

The KLKHS is available to students demonstrating excellent academic achievement and outstanding personal qualities and would like to pursue a college education or an advance training certificate. You must be a high school senior seeking college enrollment, a current college enrollee e.g., freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or enrolled in an advance certified training program to be eligible for this award.

The KLKHS scholarship committee shall normally accept applications from January 1 with April 1 as the deadline. This year, the deadline has been extended to July 1, 2026. Late, or incomplete, applications will not be accepted. The revised criteria broaden eligibility from high school senior seeking college enrollment through the college senior year and for persons enrolled in a professional course of instruction seeking a professional certificate, or other advanced education progams.

 

Awards are available annually and shall be announced by June 30th. (This is a one-time only scholarship…you cannot win multiple awards).

Who Can Apply? 

The applicant eligibility requirements are as follows:

 

  • Verified member of the Keys-Lewis- Keyes Family seeking advanced and/or certified education.

  • High school senior on track to graduate in the scholarship year - minimum GPA 2.75.

  • High school senior who has applied to an accredited college or university.

  • Active college freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior maintaining GPA 3.0.

  • Active student in professional/vocational training, with high rank endorsement.

  • Shall not be a child of a member serving on the selection committee.

  • Shall have a complete application package submitted by the deadline.

  • Must have taken the SAT/ACT examination.

Program Status

 

Due to generous donations from family, the KLK Heritage Scholarship Program is in good financial standing. Times ahead are promising for youth endeavoring to earn education and training beyond general studies in high school.
