The 2023 Keys Lewis Keyes Family Reunion was hosted in Washington DC. Most family members arrived on Friday, July 14th, although many arrived days earlier making sure they had plenty of time to tour historic monuments on the National Mall (Explore the National Mall in Washington, DC | Washington DC).
Family and friends in attendance were accommodated at the Residence Inn by Marriott (Old Town Alexandria, VA, Hotel | Residence Inn Alexandria Old Town/Duke Street (marriott.com) Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, a five-star hotel in the heart of Old Town Alexandria.
The weekend started Friday evening with greetings, hugs and kisses, laughter, table-top games, smooth jazz, and presentations addressing the KeysLewisKeyes (Home | KLK Family (keyslewiskeyes.org)) website - showing attendees how to locate and maneuver through the data provided on the website. A presentation on the KeysLewisKeyes Heritage Scholarship was given informing everyone that applications were suspended for this year but the scholarship committee has rewritten the requirements and broadened the eligibility for applicants. A tab for the scholarship program is available on the website, and announcements are made on Facebook.
As always, Josh Keyes lead the Saturday morning exercise class, and after the continnental breakfast offered by the hotel family and guests met for the reuion photo which was taken at the entrance to the Alexandria National Cemetery (Alexandria National Cemetery, VA - National Cemetery Administration).
Next, most family walked to the location Metro Train Station and caught the metro to the Washington DC Mall, where we all met to tour the National Museum of African American History and Culture (A People’s Journey, A Nation’s Story | National Museum of African American History and Culture (si.edu). We spent several hours observing the thousands of entries, presentations, illustrations, and displays before returning the Embassey Suites for dinner and the biannual talent show.
After partying in the hotel suite, a dozen family went to a nearby karaoke bar while others took the opportunity to go the the MGM National Habor Casino and Hotel (MGM National Harbor Hotel & Casino | Hotel & Casino in Oxon Hill - MGM National Harbor (mgmresorts.com) just across Potomac River in Oxon Hill, Maryland.
Sunday was the day of departure. However, before leavning Bishop Daryl Harris (Total Life Christian Ministries - Our devoted Pastors and leaders (tlcministries.org), son of the late Rev. Collins Keyes and brother of Adolph Keyes of Vallejo, California, gave a most rousing Sunday morning religious sermon.
Unfortunately, many air flights were delayed, and some canceled, leaving some stranded at the airports until late that night or the next day. Those who reserved an additional night gather for dinner at the neighborhood restaurant. A check on everyone throughout the week, revealed that everyone made it home safely.
